The Search for the Skunkape
Skunkape is a live action shadow puppet show that uses a crankie* style presentation and has accompanying live music
What is a SKUNKAPE???!!!
Skunkape is the regional name for the Bigfoot of the Florida Everglades and the larger Southeastern United States
*Crankies, aka moving panoramas, are a mid-19th century innovation. A scroll is attached to two spindles and “cranked”- causing the scroll to gradually reveal itself. Narration or music typically accompanies.
The Show
The story is a wild- goose chase (think Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner). This large-scale crankie* contains a colorfully illustrated backdrop in which shadow puppets traverse. Witness a Hunter try to capture and profit off of the Skunkape. Between moments of slapstick humor and captivating hand drawn visuals we find ourselves rooting for our big friendly Skunkape!
The story, visual art and live performance is by the puppet group The Shadow Box Collective. The group consists of artists Phil Jasen and Otoño Gaskins. Both artists tell a story that shares the deep history of folk art, tall tales and friendship you find in the Southern parts of the United States.
